Evidence exists, from as early as the 18th century, of collections of woods having been amassed by cabinetmak ers. by apothecaries, in the forestry industry and even in monastery libraries. All these persons or organizations are connected in the widest sense with wood. For the first time, however, this mode of representation has been treated by a museum in an art historical context, in particular with antique furniture. The latest developments in art history demand the continuing consideration of craft products. Today, other sciences and traditional craft techniques contribute to a better understanding of the topic. The present publication on furniture woods has therefore made use both of scientific findings in research into wood and of findings relating to historical processing techniques, and has combined these with art-historical data.
