The Incas borrowed much from the cultures that preceded them. However, these earlier civilisations did not have a written language, and unlike the Incas, did not come into direct contact with the Spanish chroniclers. As a consequence, they have remained very poorly known. Fortunately, the dynamic techniques of archaeological research have now afforded us a greater familiarity with these ancient cultures. We have now gained insights into over three thousand years of history, characterised by relatively uniform periods, or horizons, and intermediate periods of regional cultural development. Eminent Peruvian specialists present to us the cultures of the Early Horizon - the Chavfn and the Paracas - and the later Viru, Vieus, Moche and Recuay, Wari and Tiwanaku, Lambayeque-Sican, Chimu, and Chancay cultures - and naturally, the Incas.
