About the photographer. Born in Flint Michigan, David Bradford has spent most of his years in New York City. He began documenting the city with a camera in the 1980s. His seminal work, Drive-By Shootings (Konemann, 2000) is a black and white image-novel shot from behind the wheel of a taxi. It takes you on a ride, capturing the comings and goings of the metropolis in all of its seasons and personalities. This little book took off; selling off the shelves internationally and attracting critical acclaim in Europe, where it dominated the photo bestseller list for many months. The book you hold in your hand, Back Seat Book, is a departure for David; a more intimate, reflective work borne of the catastrophe that occurred in the city in 2001. On that fatal Tuesday in September Bradford s world was rocked. I called him in the morning as the events unfolded. His reaction? He ran all the way downtown - with his camera - into the mayhem. That experience changed everything. He stopped shooting, uncertain that inspiration could be gained from the pained, shocked city so familiar to him. There was much reflection on what he was shooting and why. The fragility, commonality and diversity of the people of the city seemed to hold new meaning now. And so David chose to shift his subject focus inside, to his passengers. Back Seat Book is the result of that shift. It is a more personal work that captures the breadth of humanity - the whole world of people - that can pass though the back seat of a New York City taxi. Barry Wells.
