Book DescriptionThere are thousands of medieval village churches in Europe. Although many of the original furnishings have been lost as a result of iconoclasm, wars, neglect or under the influence of the Baroque style, much has also been preserved. In many simple rural churches especially, the medieval appearance of the interior has remained surprisingly intact. These churches provide a unique insight into life and belief during the Middle Ages. The book starts with a brief outline of the different typesof church buildings in Europe. Subsequently, the focus shifts to fifteen types of furniture discussed in richly illustrated chapters. Each chapter starts with a description of the form and function of the element in question, followed by a survey of preserved examples in different countries.
