Book Description Carter thinks it's a shame to be a Negro because of his struggle in society as he chases his dream. Society scorns him, but he refuses to fault his failure on anyone. Instead, he holds himself responsible for his dilemmas. He believes that he is his own antagonist if he can't accomplish his objective. To Carter, rejection is the drive to keep on trying until he can later discover the true meaning of life, which will make him wonder-is it his fault for being a Negro or should he apologizefor being a Negro?
